Romans 5:3–5
“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”
Understanding this passage
Paul traces a path from suffering to hope. The Spirit pours God's love into the heart so hope is not a bluff that collapses.
Why this verse helps
Hopelessness says pain is pointless. This verse says God can grow perseverance, character, and a hope that will not shame you.
A prayer for you
Holy Spirit, pour God's love into my heart. Grow hope that will not put me to shame. Amen.
